BIG RED

8x10" acrylic on panel.................$125

This old building has been part of the Astoria waterfront for a long, long time. Even after losing most of its roof during a huricane a couple years back it continues as a source of inspiration. Great colors in it! I thought the ship behind might be a distraction but I think it worked out ok.

THE HAMMOND

6"x8" acrylic on linen on panel........$100SOLD

I've been listening to a lot of traditional gospel music lately. The kind of stuff Aretha Franklin sang before becoming the 'queen of soul'. Not unlike the stuff in 'The blues Brothers' scene in that church where everyone is dancing and clapping and rejoicing.  It all has that big Hammond organ sound. I love it and.....I just happen to have one sitting right here so I painted it.

DRYDOCK

6"x6" acrylic on panel...$100

I love boats so I took some shots at the Astoria shipyard afew days back. Got some stares from people working on their boats while I took pictures. They looked at me like 'what the heck is this guy up to?'

MY NEMESIS

6x6" acrylic on masonite panel SOLD

Such a pretty bird! Who would guess from this rendering that this old rooster is meaner than a junkyard dog! My daughter has two roosters. One... a nice little Bantam and then there's this one....He stands over 2 feet tall and has more aggression in him than a half dozen drunken sailors. He didn't stop crowing the whole time I was trying to get a good photo of him and when I tried to come through the gate.... Yikes! he was on me like a tornado!  jumping all over me and beating me up with his gigantic talons. It was all I could do to defend myself and get the heck outta there. I'd suggest she make dinner out of him but he's probably so tough you couldn't even make a stew from his ornery old carcass.
Anyway ...I put this in the DAILYPAINTWORKS   challenge along with yesterday's painting. Take a look at their site.

LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!

I was out moving paintings around today so  see... I'm not totally non -productive.
I hung this huge piece and 2 others in the conference room at C.R.E.S.T. in Astoria Oregon. CREST stands for  Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce.(that's a mouthful!) They do biological/environmental studies in and around the estuary and submit their findings to various agencies.  So this painting in particular is perfect for their headquarters. It's an oil I did 2 years ago titled  'ACROSS THE RIVER' and is about 60"x80". One of my favorites.

REDFIELD 8

6x6" acrylic on panel...........$100 SOLD
I shined up this old rotary telephone from the attic and asked it to pose for me today. Even the sound it made when I dialed took me back to what seems like not so long ago. Kind of a soothing, whirring and clicking sound. Our number back in  my youth was RE8-5120. The RE stood for Redfield. Each town had a different name for a prefix but unless you were calling long distance you only needed to dial the last 5 digits. And there were 'party lines' too but that's another story.

SURF CASTER

6x6" acrylic on panel..........$100 SOLD

This is another of my Grandfather's fishing rigs......at least I think that's where it came from. I'm getting so old myself that some memories are getting a little cluttered. Anyway  this rod and reel are old. I still use it in the surf sometimes but beyond its utilitarian use I think it's a beautiful piece of nostalgia. Any fisherman would see it as cool because fishermen like anything fish related. But I tried to bring out the qualities that might appeal to anyone's sense of beauty.....the cold, gleaming chrome contrasted to the warm wood handle. The black body of the reel, the old red cotton line, the ivory-like  knob.
Pretty as a picture!

Just For Fun

28x14" acrylic on canvas

So Just for fun I thought I'd post these older paintings of mine. This is what I was doing 6 years ago...all abstract. Personally, I think abstract is much more difficult and creative. Pulling ideas out of the air and bringing them to fruition is very pure and honest. These two are titled SUSHI I and Sushi II respectively. Ok... back to dailys...
